Fire-Rated Wallpaper in Malaysia: BS 476, ASTM E84 and EN 13501 Explained
A plain-English guide to the fire classifications quoted for wallcoverings and what to ask for on Malaysian projects.
Fire classification is the first question on most commercial wallcovering submissions. Different standards are quoted depending on where a product was tested, so it helps to know how they relate.
The main standards
BS 476 Parts 6 and 7 are the British tests for fire propagation and surface spread of flame, giving Class 0 and Class 1. EN 13501-1 is the European classification (A1 to F) with smoke (s1 to s3) and droplet (d0 to d2) ratings. GB 8624 is the Chinese equivalent aligned with EN 13501-1, where B1 corresponds to B-s1, d0. ASTM E84 is the American tunnel test giving Class A, B or C.
What our collections achieve
Zen Walls, Nova Walls, Artisan Walls, Atmosphere and Attalia carry ASTM E84 Class A and B-s1, d0 / GB 8624 B1 results; Prime Walls is GB 8624 B1 (B-s2, d0) and Tex Gracia passes NFPA 101 Class A. Check each collection page.
What to ask for
Get the requirement in writing from the fire consultant for each zone, such as corridors, escape routes and rooms. Then ask the supplier for the test report, not just a datasheet line.
